Farm Stories: How We Got Started
When we first started Laughing Quail Farm, we weren’t planning to build a business.
We just wanted a different kind of life.
Something slower. More hands-on. More connected to our kids, our food, and the rhythm of the land here in High Rolls, New Mexico.
Starting with a Chickens
Like a lot of homesteads, it started small.
A few animals turned into more—Nigerian Dwarf goats, chickens, ducks, geese, quail, and eventually even a pig. Our days quickly filled with feeding, cleaning, learning, and figuring things out as we went.
When our goats had babies and started producing milk, we suddenly had more than we knew what to do with.
That’s where things shifted.
From Extra Milk to Soap
At first, making soap was just practical.
We didn’t want to waste the milk, and goat milk soap had a reputation for being gentle and nourishing. So we started experimenting in small batches—learning the process, making mistakes, and slowly getting better.
What started as something just for our home turned into something we began sharing with friends and family.
And people kept asking for more.
Growing Into Something Bigger
Over time, what we made expanded naturally.
Soap led to bath soaks, then candles, then other small goods we enjoyed creating. Everything was still made the same way—at home, in small batches, in between chores and everyday farm life.
Nothing about it felt rushed or overly planned. It just grew alongside the farm.
Why We Keep Doing It
For us, this isn’t just about products.
It’s about building a life that feels grounded and meaningful. Our kids see where things come from. We work with our hands every day. And we get to share a small piece of that life with others.
Every bar of soap, every candle—it all starts here, with our animals and our routine.
